Today’s public health challenges are complex, rapidly evolving, and call for a new approach to leadership development. The Center for Health Leadership and Practice (CHLP), a center of the Public Health Institute (PHI), brings together leaders from multiple sectors to improve population health in their communities. Through our diverse strategies, we lead programs for teams, coalitions, initiatives, and professional networks to actively engage non-traditional stakeholders in their communities. Current and previous partners include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The California Endowment, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, The San Joaquin Valley Public Health Consortium, Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits, and the Hawaii Community Foundation. CHLP currently runs the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health, the California Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health and the Leadership Learning Network.
Carmen Rita Nevarez, MD, MPH, is the Director of the Center for Health Leadership and Practice and also the Vice President of External Relations for the Public Health Institute. She was previously a local Health Officer, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Medical Director, and President of the American Public Health Association. She is the creator and Director of Dialogue4Health (D4H), PHI’s internet based broadcasting station, covering issues related to health defined broadly.
