Ella A. Kazerooni, MD is a Professor of Radiology & Internal Medicine, and serves as the Associate Chief Clinical Officer for the Diagnostic and Clinical Information Oversight Team within the University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG). She received her medical degree and completed her diagnostic radiology residency at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, joining the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1992.

She has served many roles in organized radiology, including president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Thoracic Radiology, the Association of University Radiologist and the Radiology Alliance for Health Services Research in Radiology, a member of the American College of Radiology's Board of Chancellors and Executive Committee and Trustee of the American Board of Radiology. She is the inaugural chair of the American Cancer Society’s Lung Cancer Screening Roundtable, dedicated to creating lung cancer survivors through early detection and screening, imparovements and access to modern diagnostics and treatments. 

She is a frequently invited guest speaker at academic institutions and national/international meetings with expertise in lung cancer screening, and both interstitial and obstructive lung diseases is sought after by professional organizations developing multispecialty guidelines in radiology, pulmonary medicine and cardiovascular diseases with organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the National Quality Foundation. She currently is the Executive Sponsor of lung cancer screening activities of the ACR, where she also chairs the lung cancer screening registry and the Lung-RADS committee, and serves as the vice-chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guideline on Lung Cancer Screening.

Dr. Kazerooni enjoys collaborating with her colleagues in multidisciplinary teams and helping junior faculty, fellows and residents develop their academic careers, is active in several career development programs, and has received both the Teacher of the Year Award and the Mentor of the Year Award from the radiology residents at the University of Michigan. As founding Chair of Radiology's Service Excellence Committee, she has been responsible for the development and implementation of a Department wide Service Excellence program, which involves staff and faculty in all clinical and non-clinical areas, including research, billing and IT. Radiology's patient satisfaction surveys scores increased across all modalities and service locations, with the Department receiving the highest scores across the entire U-M Health System. In her current role as the Associate Chief Clinical Officer for the Diagnostic and Clinical Information Oversight Team with UMMG, she is defining the field of “diagnostic medicine,” both for clinical operations and access and availability to integrated diagnostic content for medical decision making.

Dr. Kazerooni has received numerous awards and honors. She is an elected fellow of the American College of Radiology, and the Society of Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance. She has received the Gold Medal of the American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of University Radiologists and Society of Thoracic Radiology, Madame Curie Award from the American Association of Women Radiologists, Leadership Inspiration Award from the Society of Thoracic Radiology, Early Distinguished Career award from the University of Michigan Medical School's Alumni Society, Achievement Award from the Radiology Alliance of Health Services Research, and Women in Leadership Executive Impact Award from Linkage.
