How to Research, Design & Disseminate a Social Media Health Campaign: The Drink Less for Your Breasts Initiative

Despite over thirty-years of research, 75% of  American women are unaware that consuming alcohol, even at low levels, increases their risk of breast cancer. To address this gap, we developed and implemented a social media campaign—#drinklessforyourbreasts—to let young California women know that drinking can lead to breast cancer.

Attendees will learn about alcohol use and breast cancer risk among young women, how to collect and use quantitative and qualitative data to inform health messaging, and strategies to disseminate messages via social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Attendees will gain access to campaign materials (free) to use within their own networks and educational outreach efforts to promote the health and well-being of young women. We will also share what worked, what didn’t work, and how to quickly pivot and adapt your project to changing circumstances.
